Preserved Historical Ships of the United States

(2019: Special thanks to 6th grader Becca S and her tutor Edith D for suggesting this!)

Unfortunately there are no preserved ships of the WW2 Independence-class light carriers like the USS Bataan CVL-29. One of the "Nine Sisters", USS Princeton CVL-23 was sunk October 1944, some were sold or given to other nations, but most were scrapped in the 1960s. When Spain returned USS Cabot CVL-28, there was an effort to preserve her as a museum ship in New Orleans, but funding fell through, and Cabot was scrapped in 2000. The National Naval Aviation Museum - Pensacola, FL has a reconstruction of the "island" and partial flight deck of USS Cabot CVL-28 as well as rebuilt aircraft of the many different types of planes carried by the Nine Sisters. Here are some additional "museum ship" links of all types of ships across the United States.
